Kari McGowan
I am a watercolour artist living on the northern edge of Dartmoor in the south west of England. Shifting cloudscapes and raking light define and illuminate an often bleak terrain marked by rocky outcrops and isolated thorn trees, threaded about with glittering streams.
βThe nature of watercolour allows for an expression of light, both intense and subtly modulated, sensitive to atmosphere and versatile enough to convey character. It is a magical medium β water carrying pigment to paper, transmitting light through its transparency, inviting the painter to share in a process. Having accomplished its work, the water evaporates leaving its footprint - an image.
My subjects find and haunt me, suggesting ways in which they want to be portrayed. My wish as a painter is to recall a special transient moment of grace and the feelings evoked. For over 20 years I have run Watercolour painting courses both privately and for Devon and Cornwall Adult learning and I also ran courses in collaboration with well loved Dartmoor Landscape painter, John Christian. In addition I compile the Arts and Music pages of the Dartmoor Magazine.
