The pots are mostly wheel-thrown with the occasional slab-built piece. Thrown and fired in South Devon, they are made from predominantly Cornish clay and fired to a high stoneware temperature (cone 10) in a hand-built kiln. They are soda-fired; a process whereby bicarb of soda and soda ash are introduced to the kiln at high temperature to create distinctive glazing on the pots as they vapourize.
Soda pots will sometimes show a distinct orange peel surface in some areas as well as colour variations and shadowing that reflect the movement of the flame through the kiln. Clay slips applied to the pots before firing allow for varying colours, mostly defined by the amount of iron naturally present in the clay. This gives the pots warm colouring and glazes that flow and change as you turn the pot, allowing each its own character.
